Upgrade to high-security locks in Minneapolis & Twin Cities. Bump-proof, pick-resistant, drill-protected. Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Schlage Primus. Free consultation.
Standard locks can be picked, bumped, or drilled open in seconds by anyone with basic tools and a YouTube tutorial. High-security locks are different. They're engineered with patent-protected keyways, hardened steel components, and anti-manipulation technologies that resist professional attacks. MPLS Locksmith specializes in designing and installing high-security locking systems for homes and businesses across Minneapolis and all Twin Cities suburbs. We're authorized dealers for Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Schlage Primus, and ASSA Abloy. Free security consultation available.
β οΈ FACT: A skilled intruder can bypass a standard residential deadbolt in under 2 minutes using lock bumping, picking, or drilling. High-security locks are designed to resist these exact attack methods.
High-security locks exceed the security standards of conventional locks through multiple patented technologies:
Restricted Keyways
Key blanks are patent-protected and only available from authorized dealers. You can't get copies made at hardware stores.
Bump Proof
Specially designed pins prevent lock bumping, a technique that uses a modified key to "bump" pins into place.
Pick Resistant
Complex pin configurations with false serrations, spool pins, and sidebars that make picking extremely difficult.
Drill Protected
Hardened steel inserts and rotating pins that catch and break drill bits.
Key Control
You sign a key authorization form, and we track every key cut. No unauthorized duplicates.
Standard locks meet ANSI Grade 3 (residential) or Grade 2 (light commercial). High-security locks are ANSI Grade 1 β the highest durability rating available.
Medeco is the gold standard in high-security locks. Their patented Angle-Pin technology resists bumping, picking, and drilling. Key blanks are restricted β can't be duplicated without your signed authorization card. Available in deadbolts, knobs, levers, and padlocks.
Best for: Homes, businesses, rental properties, storage units
Schlage Primus combines a traditional pin tumbler with a patented side-bar finger pin technology. The key has a secondary milling pattern that interacts with the sidebar β impossible to duplicate without authorization. Excellent weather resistance for Minnesota winters.
Best for: Residential front doors, commercial offices, schools
Mul-T-Lock uses telescopic pin technology with floating pins inside pins. This creates thousands of possible combinations and makes picking virtually impossible. They offer both mechanical and electronic high-security options.
Best for: High-value homes, jewelry stores, pharmacies, data centers
ASSA ASSA Abloy Twin and Protega2 use disc-based technology rather than traditional pins. The rotating disc stack requires precise lifting and rotation to open β extremely resistant to picking and bumping. Used by government and military facilities worldwide.
Best for: Government facilities, banks, financial institutions, executive homes
Protect your family and valuables with residential-grade high-security locks. We recommend these solutions for Minneapolis homeowners:Β
Replace your standard deadbolt with a Medeco or Schlage Primus high-security deadbolt. Same installation footprint β no door modifications needed. Available in multiple finishes to match your existing hardware.
Price: $300 β $600 per deadbolt (includes lock, keys, installation)
Rekey all your exterior doors to operate with a single high-security key. Front door, back door, garage door, and side door all work with one Medeco or Mul-T-Lock key. We provide key control cards and track all keys issued.
Price: $400 β $1,200 depending on number of locks
Sliding glass doors are notoriously vulnerable. We install high-security patio door locks with pick-resistant cylinders and reinforced strike plates. Fits most standard sliding door brands including Andersen, Pella, Jeld-Wen, and Marvin.
Price: $250 β $500 per door
Protect side gates, backyard access points, and property entrances with weather-resistant high-security padlocks or deadbolts. Keyed to match your house key for convenience.
Price: $150 β $400 per gate lock
Businesses have different security needs than homes. We design and install commercial-grade high-security systems:
Implement a master key system using restricted high-security keyways. Grand master keys open everything. Master keys open assigned zones. Change keys open individual locks. Every key is tracked and controlled. Cannot be duplicated without your written authorization.
Price: Custom quote based on lock count and hierarchy levels
Retail storefronts are common burglary targets. We install high-security rim cylinders, mortise cylinders, and panic bars with restricted keyways. Compatible with most commercial door brands and existing hardware cutouts.
Price: $350 β $800 per door
For property managers and facility directors. We implement complete key tracking systems including key authorization forms, key issuance logs, and quarterly key audits. Know exactly who has which keys at all times.

For most homeowners and businesses, yes β especially if you have valuables to protect, live in a higher-risk area, or simply want the best security available. Standard locks can be bumped or picked in under 2 minutes by someone with basic skills and $20 in tools. High-security locks are designed to resist these exact attacks. The average cost difference is $200-$400 per lock. When you consider the value of what you're protecting (family, belongings, business assets), that's a relatively small investment for significant peace of mind.Β
Yes, but it's much more difficult and time-consuming than opening a standard lock. High-security locks may require specialized tools, extensive training, or even drilling as a last resort. Drilling a high-security lock destroys it β requiring full replacement. That's why we strongly recommend having multiple keys and never relying on a single copy. For this reason, we also offer non-high-security backup entry points (like a side or back door) or smart lock integration for keyless access.Β
No β that's the entire point of key control. High-security key blanks are patent-protected and restricted. Only authorized dealers (like MPLS Locksmith) can purchase the blanks. And even then, we require signed authorization from the key system owner before cutting any duplicates. This prevents former employees, tenants, or anyone else from making unauthorized copies of your keys.Β
+ What's the difference between Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Schlage Primus?Β
All three are excellent high-security brands, but they use different technologies:
Medeco: Uses angled pins that must be lifted, rotated, and aligned to specific positions. Very strong physical security.
Mul-T-Lock: Uses telescopic pins (pins inside pins) for thousands of possible combinations. Extremely pick resistant.
Schlage Primus: Uses a traditional pin tumbler with an additional sidebar that reads a secondary milling pattern on the key.
For most homeowners, Medeco or Schlage Primus is the sweet spot between security and cost. For high-value assets, Mul-T-Lock or ASSA Abloy provides maximum protection. We can recommend based on your specific needs and threat assessment.
Yes β but you need to choose the right model. Schlage Primus and Mul-T-Lock have excellent weather resistance and operate smoothly in extreme cold. Medeco also performs well but may require occasional lubrication in sub-zero temperatures. We recommend professional installation ensures proper alignment, which is critical for smooth winter operation. Avoid inserting keys when ice is present β use a lock de-icer first.Β
+ Can I install high-security locks myself?Β
Technically, yes β if you're handy and have the right tools. But we strongly recommend professional installation for high-security locks. The tolerances are much tighter than standard locks. Improper installation can cause misalignment, difficult operation, or even lock failure. Additionally, high-security locks require key registration and key control documentation that authorized dealers must manage. We include installation, key tracking setup, and a warranty with every high-security lock.Β
Yes β this is one of our specialties. We design and install master key systems using restricted high-security keyways from Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, or ASSA Abloy. We map your entire facility, determine access levels for each employee, create a cylinder chart, and implement the system with full key tracking. We also provide key control logs, authorization forms, and ongoing support for key issuance. Contact us for a free commercial security consultation.Β
+ How long does high-security lock installation take?Β
A single deadbolt takes 30-60 minutes to install. Rekeying 4-6 locks to a single high-security key takes 1-2 hours. Complete commercial master key systems may take 1-3 days depending on lock count and complexity. We'll provide a timeline during your consultation.Β
Some can. Medeco offers electronic high-security options that combine physical security with keyless convenience. We also offer smart lock installations from brands like Schlage Encode, August, and Yale β but these are not the same as mechanical high-security locks. For maximum security, some homeowners choose a hybrid approach: high-security mechanical locks on primary entry points plus smart locks for convenience on secondary doors. We can design a system that balances both priorities.Β
+ What happens if I lose my only high-security key?Β
Losing your only key is a bigger problem with high-security locks than standard locks. Because key blanks are restricted, you can't just get a duplicate from a hardware store. We can: (a) cut a new key if we have your key code on file, (b) decode the lock to create a new key (takes longer, costs more), or (c) rekey the lock to a new key. The best solution is prevention: order at least 4-6 keys when you first install high-security locks. Keep one in a secure location (safe, trusted neighbor) as a backup.Β
Standard locks provide standard protection. High-security locks provide professional-grade security that resists bumping, picking, and drilling.
